Bruno Boulay is a French cabinet maker, furniture designer and master craftsman working from his Berkshire workshop. Trained in the French tradition of cabinet making, he creates handmade luxury furniture for exceptional homes throughout the United Kingdom.
His work is guided by restraint in form, precision in execution, and an unwillingness to send a piece from the workshop until it is genuinely ready.
Working alongside a small team of cabinetmakers, Bruno designs and builds handcrafted furniture for private homes across the United Kingdom. Each commission is resolved at the bench, drawn from timber selected in person and finished by hand.
His furniture begins with the room, not the game. A pool table, a shuffleboard or a bar billiards table is approached first as a piece of cabinetry, and only second as a playing surface.

The Workshop

Bruno's Berkshire workshop combines traditional cabinet making with modern precision engineering. Every commission is handcrafted using carefully selected hardwoods, traditional joinery and hand-applied finishes. A timber store holds the boards selected for future commissions, allowing the timber to acclimatise before work begins. Timber that has not settled cannot be made to last.
The benches are the centre of everything. Planes, chisels and marking gauges occupy the same surface as the digital calipers and machine-guided precision that earns its place on lighter work. Traditional and modern are not opposed here; one is the judge of the other.

There is no production line. Only a small number of commissions leave the workshop each year, reflecting the time required to design, make, finish and inspect every piece properly.

Why Handmade
Matters
There is a difference between furniture made for one client and furniture designed for repeatable production. Handmade furniture allows the materials, proportions, joinery and finish to be resolved around a particular commission rather than a standard specification.
Traditional joinery matters because furniture designed for generations must remain structurally sound through years of use. Mortise-and-tenon joints create strong mechanical connections within the frame and allow the construction itself to contribute to the longevity of the piece.
Bespoke furniture becomes part of the home because it was drawn for that home. When the proportions, the materials and the finish are agreed with one room in view, the table belongs to that room in a way no catalogue piece can match.
Quality cannot be rushed because the parts of the process that matter most take the longest to do well. Timber has to settle. Finish has to dry. Brass has to be fitted, not glued. We take the time, because the time is what handmade furniture is made of.
